The Sanctuary of Santa Maria infra Saxa and the so-called Tempio di Valadier are two sanctuaries and chapel located at the entrance of the Frasassi Caves
The sanctuary is ancient; it is cited in documents from 1029. It is a simple stone structure built by Benedictine monks to house a burned image of the Madonna.
Next to Santa Maria infra Saxa, right at the centre of the cave, stands the Madonna of Frasassi shrine, also known as the Valadier Temple, because it is generally attributed to the style of architect Giuseppe Valadier. Built in the neoclassical style
Inside there is a Madonna with a child, sculpted by Canova's workshop, replaced by a copy, since the original is kept in the Genga Museum.
Originally the temple was designed as a refuge for Christians asking for forgiveness, thus making use of the nickname of "refuge of sinners".
