General Mills Inc. (NYSE:GIS) officials announced Wednesday that the company is working alongside law-enforcement officials to investigate a fake company press release that was released Tuesday night.

The statement titled "Obama Orders Full Investigation of General Mills Supply Chain Following Food Recalls" was removed from media outlets including PR Newswire, however, General Mills officials commented that Google Inc's (NASDAQ:GOOG) automated alerts pushed the fake statement onto the public's radar.

"This information did not come from the company," said General Mills officials in a statement. "It was not authorized or confirmed by the company. We are shocked that it was posted. It was quite clearly and obviously a hoax."

Shares of General Mills are trading up 1.03% Wednesday afternoon at $503.13.
