SAINT PATRICKS DAY PARADE

The annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade started Thursday in New York City with a sea of green revellers along Fifth Avenue.

This year, the ever-present gay and lesbian demonstrators were joined by firefighters protesting against a new dress code.

Along the parade, the loudest cheers erupted for the "Fighting 69th," the New York National Guard's 69th Infantry Regiment that has lost several men in Iraq.

Among those killed was Bronx firefighter Chris Engeldrum, who died in a roadside bombing attack last November.

Hundreds of firefighters refused to parade and watched from the sidelines in protest at a Fire Department order prohibiting them from wearing green berets.

The Fire Department issued an order declaring that only the blue dress uniform, including the official cap, could be worn during the parade.

The order banned the green berets, a tradition that dates back more than 30 years.

A few blocks past the start, demonstrators gathered to protest against the longstanding refusal to allow lesbians and gays from marching in the parade under their own banner.

Naturally, many in the crowd watching the parade wore something green.

There were loud cheers for both the current New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, and his predecessor, Rudolph Giuliani.
