A very brief introduction to Capsicum flexuosum, a unique species of chilli pepper that displays incredible cold tolerance.

A couple of my plants can be seen growing here in the northwest of the UK, with temperatures this week alone reaching -5 C and the plants receiving punishment from hard frosts and snowfall.

The seeds of this species can be tricky to germinate, and the plant itself suffers from self-fertility issues, requiring at least one partner plant to achieve a moderate harvest. Despite this, it’s almost totally unique amongst Capsicum species for its adaptability to cold climates and can continue to provide spicy pods for the kitchen deep into winter.
