Chinatown is a neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles city, California. Located 6 min (1.3 mi) north of Downtown Los Angeles. Chinatown has a total area of 0.91 square mile.
Major Highway like Freeway 5 (Interstate 5) travels near east region of Chinatown. The State Route 110 (SR 110) travels through the west region. U.S. Route 101 (US 101) travels through the south region. Chinatown is bordered by the Los Angeles city neighborhood: on the north by Elysian Park, on the east by Los Angeles River and Lincoln Heights, on the south by Los Angeles Plaza Historic District, and on the west by Echo Park.
Chinatown area is located along north Broadway, north Hill Street and north Spring Street. North Broadway currently is the busiest area with shopping centers like Central Plaza, Far East Plaza, Dynasty Shopping Center, and Saigon Plaza all located along. The Dragon's Gate entrance to Chinatown is just a couple of blocks from Union Square.
Metro Chinatown station
Chinatown station is an elevated light rail station on the L Line (Gold line) of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. Chinatown station is located along Spring Street above College Street since July 26, 2003. Chinatown station is a 3 levels layout and a Chinese palace style design with lots of Asian elements. Yong Bell at the street level: The replica of the 2,100-year-old bell is a gift of friendship from Los Angeles' sister city, Guangzhou, China at June 2001. It is a Symbol of Harmony and Peace. The Wheels of Change since 2003 designed by Chusien Chang at mezzanine level: The artwork at the Chinatown Station is based on the ancient Chinese book of I Ching (translated in English as the Book of Changes). Written more than 3,000 years ago, the I Ching describes 64 states of human situations. The 3rd Floor Platform design is an open space and Asian architectural element like green tiled upturned roof of the shelter on the elevated upper platform to the red accents throughout the station. Chinatown station is only 5 minutes to Chinatown Central Plaza.
Central Plaza
The original Chinatown developed in the late 19th century, but it was demolished to make room for Union Station, the city's major ground-transportation center. A separate commercial center, known as "New Chinatown," opened for business in 1938. Central Plaza is the major culture and activity center for Chinatown community with Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association right inside. The famous Chinese New Year’s celebration and Chinatown Summer Night all held in Central Plaza. Central Plaza can be seen today as an early blueprint for outdoor mall and as a precursor to “theme-park” shopping like The Grove and Universal City Walk in LA. Central Plaza is designed like ancient China city: the gaily painted balconies, the carved brackets and luminous tile work, the windows covered by ornately and carved screens in geometric patterns, and the sweeping upturned roofs — many of which are decorated with additional sculptures of mythical animals. Central Plaza with neighbor restaurants and stores become one of the tourist attractions for Landmark and Historical Place in Downtown Los Angeles area.
