I wanted to upgrade this Hornby Class A3 (R2201 'Robert the Devil') from being an anlogue model with a ringfield motor to being a digital sound fitted model with a CD drive motor.

However, CD drive motors are a lot faster than ringfield motors and Hornby decoders don't have speed control features built in. This means that the models can run extremely fast even at low speed steps on the controller.

To reduce the speed of the model I looked at adjusting the gearing on the motor and I was able to replace the pinion gear with a 9 tooth version. I also looked at the electronics and was able to add in resistors to reduce the voltage to the motor.

Then I used the Back EMF settings to ensure that the model started on low speeds steps, had a nice slow speed crawl and pulled away smoothly.

It's not a perfect solution since when the throttle is over 75% the model still runs far too quickly, but that's something I'll have to live with unless I want to fit a far more expensive sound decoder that has speed control functionality.
