Cooper, the male lead, made a promise to his daughter Murphy ("the female lead"): "I'll come back when you're as old as I was when I left." However, this promise remained unfulfilled in the end. In the final scene of the movie, Cooper bids a belated farewell by Murphy's hospital bed. By this time, Murphy has come to terms with the time discrepancy and tells Cooper, "You should go now. Go find Brand." Cooper eventually departs in a spacecraft, setting off to look for Dr. Brand, who is waiting on Edmunds' planet.
