June 7 - 8, 2020 - Today we backpacked 7 miles in the Veach Gap / Little Crease Mountain area in the Massanutten Mountains. The weather was absolutely goregous. Temps in the mid 70s, sunny skies, and very little humidity. We hiked in about a mile to the Little Crease Shelter. The river (Mill Run) was really high (due to heavy rainfall in the previous days) and was difficult to cross the river (definitely bring hiking poles!). We dropped off most our stuff off at the shelter and headed north on the Massanutten/Tuscarora Trail to the South Fork Shenandoah River Overlook for a 5 mile roundtrip day hike. There were many views along the way overlooking Fort Valley. We heard a conversation between 2 owls and saw a toad. When we got back to the shelter, we relaxed, filtered water, and started a cooking/campfire that lasted 4 hours. My favorite bird, the Wood Thrush, was heard pretty much the whole time we were at the shelter which was nice. We grilled summer sausage and the jiffy pop was a success. The sunset views from the drone were phenomenal as well as the orange glow off the mountains. We heard a Whip-poor-will around 9pm but it went away luckily after about 30 minutes. In the morning, Hayden discovered that a wasp was under his sleeping pad that was crushed. Then, he found out that he got stung in the back from that wasp while he was asleep. Finally, we hiked a mile back to the parking lot. Overall a really fun trip and a great place to backpack.
