Key Stages of Investigation
1. FIR Registration:
The process begins with the filing of an FIR by the informant, which triggers the police to investigate a cognizable offense.
2. Proceeding to the Crime Scene:
An investigating officer (IO) goes to the location of the crime to understand the facts and circumstances.
3. Evidence Collection:
The IO gathers evidence, which may include physical objects, forensic reports, and photographic/video evidence of the scene.
4. Witness Examination:
The IO examines witnesses and may record their statements in writing, as per Section 161 CrPC.
5. Arrest of Suspects:
Efforts are made to discover and arrest the suspected offender.
6. Case Diary Maintenance:
The investigating officer must maintain a day-by-day record of their proceedings in an investigation diary, as per Section 172 CrPC.
7. Charge Sheet Submission:
