This riflebird is a medium sized bird, reaching 34 cm in length. The male is a velvety black bird of paradise with elongated black filament side feathers, a turquoise crown, broad triangular breast protectors, and a central tail feather. It has a black curved beak, yellow mouth, blackish legs and dark brown irises. Brownish female with dark spots and a buff bar underneath with white eyebrows. Immature males resemble males but with fewer tail feathers
