In the epic Mahabharata, Barbarik was blessed with three infallible arrows, making him the mightiest warrior of all. Before the war of Kurukshetra began, Lord Krishna appeared before him in disguise to test his devotion and power. Realizing that Barbarik’s strength could make the war endless, Krishna requested his head as a sacrifice (daan).
Without hesitation, Barbarik offered his head with utmost devotion and surrender. Lord Krishna, deeply moved, blessed him saying:
“In Kali Yuga, you shall be worshipped as Shyam, the Lord who helps the helpless. Whoever takes your name with faith will have their wishes fulfilled.”

In Khatu village (Sikar district, Rajasthan), devotees worship only the sacred head of Shyam Baba, which was discovered centuries after the Mahabharata war.
