Llum BCN will brighten up the streets of Barcelona once again this November, with Poblenou serving as the epicentre of this internationally acclaimed festival of lights. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Llum BCN has become one of the most eagerly awaited events on the city’s cultural calendar. The schedule for 2021 is exceptional, giving the festival time to prepare for its regular comeback in February 2022.

Llum BCN is a large-scale laboratory of the nocturnal landscape, featuring artists with long-standing careers on the international scene. These creative explorers will shine together for three straight nights, combining their respective backgrounds in art, lighting design, interactive environment design, architecture, enhanced media experiences and live performance art. Beyond its festive nature, and in addition to being a spectacular transient show, Llum BCN is meant to be a chance to ask questions, to challenge our preconceived notions of what urban space can be and to create new models of participation and social interaction in public spaces.

Beginning in 2012 and moving to Poblenou in 2018, Llum BCN is a unique event. It sparkles with its own artistic personality and is a reflection of other landmark light festivals in Europe. It is also unwavering in its drive to become a trailblazer and showcase for new artistic paths of technology and light.

The festival will dazzle the urban landscape in Poblenou and 22@, which features everything from large state-of-the-art buildings to old smokestacks, warehouses and the like. Under this new light, we can see how it has transformed from an industrial past to an avant-garde present. For three nights, the public will have the chance to discover the neighbourhood like never before. In many cases, the festival is the first time people are allowed in certain restricted spaces.

In previous years, Llum BCN brought in A-list creators such as Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, United Visual Artists, Luke Jerram, Julio Le Parc and Daniel Canoga. Both they and this year’s featured artists are in the official programme alongside Barcelona’s schools of design, architecture, art and lighting. This creates a harmony among on-the-ground artists and scholars, which is a hallmark of the Llum BCN model.
