Catching snapper mid morning off Tokerau - do I out fish the kontiki again...

Mid morning snapper antics of Tokerau - back into the snaps on the surfcasters 🎣

Having had a good snapper bite the previous night before off Tokerau, we decided to come back and see if the hot bite could follow on into the daylight hours. Normally that kind of hot bite happens more so during those darker hours, so it was going to be interesting if the fish were still there with the sun up.

We had the tiki back onboard with us as well so the plan of attack for the morning was to try and catch a kahawai to use as fresh bait. If going off last night I didn't really like our chances, it was pretty crazy that I basically only caught snapper. This morning fish was more of a lazy fish with the sun already up, but being in the far north you just never know.

I flicked out my first bait while Stevo made up a few new tiki traces. We still had a few things on our side, the likes of overcast, a bit of showers coming through and still a little leftover swell rolling in. Once again it didn't take too long to get my first nibbles and a couple baits later, up slid a nice 45-47cm snap. It wasn't a bad fish for off the Tokerau sand and the first for the morning.

The bites were few and far between during the morning being a lot brighter, but after a few more bites Stevo was next to hook up. It was another nice little snap for the bin. The clouds came and went over the morning but over all we fished in overcast conditions. Although the bite was a lot slower than last night at least we were still having a bit of action. I was onto another fish as the rain followed along the hill line in the background. None of these fish were big but the best thing of all we were getting nothing undersize which was amazing.

This next little snap was close to 40cm which was basically the average we were landing. The fish were turning up roughly every 5 mins, so it wasn't to bad action we were getting for during the day light hours at all. We caught a couple more for the morning and just on the turn of the midday tide we decided to finish the morning off with a quick tiki set. It only added another couple to the bin which was similar to last night with one being fish of the day at around 60cm. Once again it was the surfcasters out fishing the tiki.
There was definitely plenty of fish for the taking here and even though we were still getting a few hits on the casters we called it a morning and a fun one at that - there's just nothing like catching a few fish off the sand with a mate...
