I'm replaced the nut on my Dean VX guitar. This is the first time I've ever done any nut work on my guitar.
results =
1 - buzzing open strings = resolved
2 - tuning issues = resolved
Maybe some tone & sustain improvement = definitely a much richer sounding guitar

I got the Graph Tech nut for $14 so this was a huge improvement for low investment. You also need sandpaper, wood glue, a feeler gauge tool (auto parts store), and time to do it. It took me a couple of hours while I watched movies - mostly sanding the new nut to fit correctly. The Dean had some uneven wood so I solved that with a shim I cut from a business card.
