Description:
The 6th of July, 2015, a Monday, was our 29th day of travel. After having arrived at the Denali Grizzly Bear RV Park located about 7 miles south of Denali Rainbow Village along Alaska Route 3 (George Parks Highway), and having set the trailer up for the duration of our stay, we decided to then pay a short visit to Denali National Park Visitor Center to procure tickets for one of their tours. We booked a ride on the Denali "Eielson" excursion for the 8th of July, a Wednesday, which takes one around 66 miles into the park along the Park Road. We then proceeded to the Park Road on our own, into the Park searching for a view of Denali...which was reportedly visible somewhere between 8-11 miles into the Park.
There are no gas stations along the Park Road, and being mindful of not having a full tank of gas, and also not having seen Denali after having traveled as far as 11 miles west into the park, we decided to turn back and head for "home."
We at first thought maybe we were looking in the wrong direction, and that perhaps Denali was behind us, facing east. Denali was actually located southwest of our locations as we headed west. However...facing east we saw a mountain having snow peaks...and believed it to be Denali. It was not. It was, however, part of the Alaska Range glaciers. Impressive nevertheless!
We continued on to the Riley store, witnessed the Alaskan Railroad passing by, and encountered a moose with her calf at the store! The trip wasn't a total waste.
We discovered that at the Mercantile store we had access to WiFi and cell phone coverage! At last...we're back in touch with humanity! Placed a quick call to my son, and proceeded back to the RV.
On the 7th of July, travel day 30, we decided to check out the location and property of the Tonglen Lake Resort and Canine kennels where we would board the two pups during our Denali Park tour on the 8th of July, 2015, a beautiful ride only about a mile distant down Hwy 3 south of our Grizzly Bear campsite. This small resort is nestled in the mountains nearby, complete with a lake, and hosts some of the most beautiful scenery to be seen.
Later that day, on the 7th of July, we also paid a visit to the Denali Boardwalk...an interesting experience all of its own. It seems that no one who works at these locations are native to Alaska! The hired help shows up from the lower 48 to work in Alaska during the summer months!
Of note this day was the continuing smoke from the wildlands' fires up north near Fairbanks. Several tourists were wearing bandanas covering their noses and mouths to prevent inhaling the smoke, some were coughing as they'd walk the boardwalk visiting the shops.
