In late August 2025, an 18-year-old named Dontea Anthony Jr. was critically injured but survived a house explosion in north St. Louis County, Missouri, by escaping from the basement through flames. He was home alone at the time of the natural gas blast, which destroyed his family’s home.

The explosion: Anthony’s uncle, Terance Hardy, told reporters that the teen was in the basement when he heard a “tick-tick or a click-click,” followed by the explosion.
Trapped in the rubble: The blast caused the roof and other parts of the home to collapse, blocking his exit.
Escape through flames: Anthony’s athletic instincts from playing football and track kicked in, and he was forced to climb through burning rubble to get out of the destroyed house.
Critical injuries: He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, including burns covering 85% of his body. His uncle described his survival as “miraculous”.

Family members: Other family members were not home at the time of the explosion. Anthony’s mother was out jogging, his father was at work, and his twin brother was at college.
Community support: A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family with medical bills and to rebuild their lives. The community also organized a fundraiser.
Investigation: While the likely cause was a natural gas explosion, an investigation is underway to determine the exact ignition point. Neighbors reported smelling gas before the blast.
