Video shows our visit to Burghley House on 19th March 2024.
Burghley House is a 16th century English country house near Stamford Lincolnshire.
The house was built by William Cecil the 1st Lord of Burghley (1520 - 1598). William Cecil was the High Treasurer and Chief Minister to Queen Elizabeth I
The house is still occupied by direct descendants of William Cecil.
With 18 state rooms to explore there is so much to see in the house including a travelling bed used by Princess Victoria when she visited in 1836.
There are a number of spectacular ceilings and walls painted by Antonio Verrio ( 1639-1707) with characters from mythology each depicting the purpose of each room.
The most striking of these frescoes are the Heaven Room and Hell Staircase.
There is also an exhibition of the 6th Marquess David Cecil's Olympic achievements which include Gold and Silver medals won at the 1928 and 1932 Olympic games.
Burghley House has been used in many films and tv programmes including amongst others De Vinci Code, Pride and Prejudice, The Crown, Middlemarch and Bleak House.
We also visited the South gardens which are usually the realm of the family, but are open to the public for a few weeks each year to show the beautiful spring displays. there is also an extensive sculpture garden and a fantastic garden of surprises with numerous water features.
