Exploring a high-walled urban stream, John and I spent a fascinating summer afternoon flipping light, 2" lures in search of wild trout back in August 2020. Because the trees have grown over so much of this river below street-level and behind forgotten factories, you are quickly cut off from the surrounding "civilisation". In the dappled sunlight it was easy to forget where we were and, instead, focus on presenting our lures to likely looking spots and working the river as we made our way stealthily upstream.

By swapping out who was "on point" we were able to share out the water in a fairly polite manner (well as polite as we ever get towards each other).

The climbing/scrambling and (sometimes) balancing that we did to keep searching around the next bend in the river felt really quite similar to the exploration of small "genryu" style streams in Japan - although we need to go back over there on a dedicated wild camping/multi-day expedition to get into the true "genryu" activity in Japan. All the same, our mini adventure for a few hours on a summer afternoon definitely had a similar vibe.
FISH WELFARE:
Importantly, barbless single hooks, rubberised mesh nets and wet hands ensures good catch and release survival. With this style of ultralight, mobile fishing, there is absolutely no reason to give any less care and consideration to the trout as when fly fishing for them.

More UK BFS CONTENT COMING:
Look out for future videos where I do simple upgrades to affordable Bait Finesse System (BFS) reels as well as diving deeper into the casting skills as I improve my own skills.
