After 4 days of sub-zero temperatures, our roller coaster temperatures shot up to 55 degrees a few days later - just before January 1st. So you might wonder - Should I tap my maple trees already?
Well, there are several factors to consider.
1- If the temperatures remain too warm - all above freezing - the sap will not flow. So warmer, stable weather above freezing is problematic.
2- Even if it is above freezing - is the ground frozen? If the soil is frozen, there will be minimal water draws up through the root systems.
3. What's the longer range forecast? If it becomes cold again, you might want to hold off tapping to wait for a better run in temperatures like 45/25, with the better freeze/thaw changes.
I have successfully tapped as early as January 5th (about 6 weeks earlier than normal) and still collected sap, so it is a viable option to consider.
