Kondwani Phiri, a genetic researcher, explores how genes influence our health and how gene engineering could help direct human evolution. Natural selection drives evolution, but in labs, processes like CRISPR and PRIME editing can speed it up, offering major medical breakthroughs and potential solutions to global challenges. These tools let us modify and 're-program' the genetics of living organisms.

Phiri meets experts who use gene-editing to enhance food crops, accelerate reforestation, and improve farm animal traits by selecting for desired physical features and gender. One groundbreaking project even attempts to resurrect extinct species, such as the Woolly Mammoth.

Despite some public concern, gene-editing is definitely a cause for hope in the fight against genetic disorders in humans. It’s already reversing a type of congenital blindness in children. And with the hyper-precision afforded by PRIME editing being prepared for clinical trials, a much more hopeful world will be revealed for families in the future.
