Mister runs off Nettie from his farm, after she refuses his advances. Celie and her sister do everything possible to remain together, but it is no use. Mister drags Nettie kicking and screaming into the road. With tears streaming down Celie's face, she yells to her sister Nettie to "Write". And Nettie points her finger in Celie's direction, and with tears falling from her face, she yells, "Nothing But Death Will Keep Me From It".
Sadly, that is the last Celie will see of Nettie for many many years. But Nettie does keep her promise to write to Celie. Unfortunately, Mister is the only one that is allowed to check the mailbox. And so whenever any mail from Nettie arrives, Mister keeps it from Celie. Many years go by, and Celie is a middle aged woman, before she discovers her first letter from Nettie. And she finds out where Nettie went after leaving her that day. A journey that would take her across the waters, and unite her with family in a miraculous way.
