I believe that skills will become their own currency in the next economic collapse. In my latest video, we talk about 7 skills that you can learn this winter to help you thrive when our currency collapses.
1. Bartering: Bartering is a system of exchange that was used before currency or money was commonly used. It is when two parties get what they need by trading what they already own or a service. I love bartering because it is totally legal. It is not trackable or taxable.
2. Butchering: Unless you live on a farm or are a hunter, you may never have a chance to break down an animal. Butchering a valuable skill. Pick up some books on butchery and grab a raw chicken if you don’t have access to a fresh un-alived animal. If you know a hunter, ask to hang with them for a day so you can learn to field dress.
3. Canning and Food Preservation: In the video, we are canning some fresh venison while we are chatting about the 7 skills. Make sure you are storing food properly and using safe preservation guidelines like the Ball Blue Book.
4. How to Start a Fire: This is an important skill starting with fire safety. You don’t need to go with a primitive bow drill, but learning to use a fire striker, matches or lighter is an important start. Also, learning how fires burn in different scenarios is key. Fires light and burn differently in a fireplace, cookstove or a big bonfire outside.
5. First Aid: Taking a basic first aid and CRP class is the best place to start your first aid journey. Learning how to deal with common things like cuts, scrapes, bug bites and sunburns at home is a needed skill. Fevers and common viruses can often be treated at home. The medical system in the USA is already starting to break down with massive shortages on consumable products. The risk of being exposed to dangerous sickness is real when you go to the ER for something that can be treated at home. Using herbal remedies to relive symptoms is a wonderful skill too.
6. Foraging: Learning to forage for wild edible plants and medical herbs make a very valuable skill for anyone at any time. Start by learning the plants in your area! Start right in your own backyard for some easy plants to identify like dandelion, chickweed or purslane. Use the experts in your area for some guided tours. Remember that everything is edible….once!
7. Gardening and Seed Harvesting: Start off by cultivating your wild edibles. If something is growing already, give it some more room! Learning what growing zone you are in and what grows best in your area is a valuable skill. You want to find seeds that are heirloom, easy to grow and are super tasty! You want your family to eat what you harvest. Get those soil amendments now!
8. BONUS TIP! Substitutions: In an economic collapse, the supply chains are stressed and there may not be the abundance of ingredients for cooking or baking. Start experimenting now with how to substitute an egg in a recipe or make your own cake flour. Trust me, you will thank yourself for it!
Winter is a great time to stock up and learn about new skills. We have more down time as the days are shorter and much colder. During this season, it is easy to get the winter blues or even seasonal depression. By researching and practicing some new skills, you can enhance your motivation for spring! Boost your self confidence by preparing for what is next by using some positive distraction. Researching these 7 skills for the economic collapse will leave you empowered, informed and confident you can handle whatever gets thrown your way. Thank you for watching!
