Br Charles Barry was born in Ireland in 1938. He arrived in Australia in 1959 and spent his first years of teaching at Patrician Brothers, College, Fairfield, NSW. He was principal there from 1965 to 1967 when he put his hand up to be one of two first Patricians to minister in Papua New Guinea.
He arrived in, Aitape, PNG, in 1968 and became the principal of St Ignatius High School. At the end of 1977, he and Br Michael Vella, trekked over the mountains to Walamu and built a secondary school there from scratch.
He did such a good job there that the PNG government asked him to be the principal of two other schools in the region which were having difficulties.
Br Charles returned to Sydney in 1995 after twenty-seven years in PNG. He went straight back into the Australian classroom at Delany College, Granville. He returned to studies and qualified as a school counsellor, which was the ministry he performed at Delany College until his retirement in 2018 at the age of 80!
He died of cancer on the morning of the 7th March, 2024. A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary church, Fairfield.
