The chord progression for 'Early Winter' arrived before the lyrics. Since it felt cheerful, I wanted to avoid the default angst of most of my material. But it's tough for me to write a happy song. Inevitably, the song became a reflection of the moment, and in that moment (in addition to reading the bleak "Grapes of Wrath"), I was dreaming of a relationship that was definitely not meant to be. So I invented the possibility of one in the song. Isn't that the purpose of writing anyway? If all we wanted was reality, it's right there for the taking--no song needed. But sadly, even in my imagination, this fling didn't end well. Thank you for listening, and special thanks to my video collaborators, Gary and David.

Lyrics:
Early Winter - Matt Jaffe

And so she told me, she goes running with wolves
They speak to her in broken English
Orion’s empty, but Ursa Major’s full
The scent of cigarettes extinguished

La-da-da, an early winter is softly creeping
Don’t I know her bird can’t sing
La-da-da, an early winter, while she was sleeping
And I’m not expecting Spring

The first rays of sunset are printed on her skin
They keep the rattlesnakes in hiding
There comes a flicker when you think you’ve found your twin
But hearts are predisposed to lying

There must be some place where that happy feeling goes
Why does the march of time conceal it?
Just like the flash of pain from when she pierced her nose
It’s gone as quickly as we feel it
