Knitting Lobster Trap Headings, Cape George, Nova Scotia, Canada (2022)

Today lobster traps are made of metal, or if netting is used, it comes in sheets to be cut to size and attached to traps. But before these new processes, the traps were often made at home and the netting knitted by the family. It is a beautiful skill that is slowly being lost as those who remember how to do it, forget as the years go by. Tommy McEachern is retired from fishing and Hughie still fishes with his son Mark. Both were not sure they could remember how to knit, but after some thought and a little practice it all came back to them! And the great thing is that Hughie is now teaching Mark how to work the needle! So maybe this is a skill that will last a little longer in this family. Let’s hope! Special thanks to musicians Crowander for the use of their song "Celtic".
