There are about 20 million people in the world who need a wheelchair, but don't have access to one. The ability to walk and move freely is one we often take for granted. As a Wheelchair Foundation Ambassador, I have worked to remedy the blatant denial of human rights when a person with a disability is refused a wheelchair. I traveled to several rural towns in Colombia to distribute the chairs that I helped raise money for, and the experience gave me a lot of insight as to how life-changing a wheelchair can really be. The goal of this TEDx talk is to hopefully change the way we think about a wheelchair: it is not a restriction but instead a source of freedom. Rachel Zhang is a senior at Amador Valley. She has had a passion for public speaking since she started high school. She has run Amador's Speech and Debate Club for three years, and the experience has only grown her love for writing and delivering speeches. In the past few years, she has also worked very closely with the Wheelchair Foundation as one of their student ambassadors. Both her work with the Foundation and as a public speaker are highlights of her high school experience, and so she is very happy to bring the two together in this TEDx speech. Some hobbies she enjoys are reading, watching films, and playing the piano. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
