STORYLINE:

A raging fire broke out on Saturday at a Moscow art market popular with tourists, killing one woman.

The blaze at the market in northeast Moscow, called Izmailovsky Vernisazh (Exhibition), sent wind-driven thick black smoke high into the sky and flames leapt from several structures built to resemble traditional Russian buildings, including one topped with the onion-shaped vaulted roof characteristic of Russian Orthodox churches.

About two hours after the blaze broke out, firefighters appeared to have prevented it from spreading to other parts of the sprawling market, but the
buildings that caught fire were destroyed.

Most were faced with logs and firefighters seemed to be letting them burn themselves out; charred log chunks periodically fell from the buildings' steel girders.

One fire fighter complained that their work was hampered by a shortage of water at the site.

Helicopters were later used to douse the flames from above.

The fire reportedly broke out about 1:30 p-m (1030 GMT).

A man who identified himself as a merchant at the market said it apparently began in a cafe on an upper story of one of the buildings and then spread to an adjacent four-story log-faced building.

The Moscow prosecutor's office said that arson is suspected, according to reports from news agencies.

An official at the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told The Associated Press a woman died from smoke inhalation.

According to eye witnesses, a second woman was injured when she jumped out of a high window to escape the flames.

Earlier the death toll had been reported at two.

An area of 10-thousand square metres (107,600 square feet) was affected by the fire.

The market has been popular for more than a decade with both locals and tourists, who flock there on weekends to buy Russian crafts and antiques.
