Premature ejaculation is when a man climaxes within 1-2 minutes of starting sex. It’s very common, and often nothing to worry about, but it can sometimes cause distress if it happens a lot. Here Dr Daniel Atkinson, Clinical Lead at Treated, talks us through the causes and treatments for it.

Premature ejaculation (PE) can sometimes be quite hard to define because different couples can have different expectations about how long sex should last. For the most part it’s simply down to nerves, for instance when you’ve just started getting intimate in a new relationship. However when it’s a little more persistent it can cause distress and affect the relationship in a wider sense. Fortunately there are self-help tips as well as medicines you can try to help delay your ejaculations.

In terms of treatment, the widest range of choice comes in the form of topical treatments such as EMLA and Stud 100. These are creams or sprays that you’ll apply directly to your penis to reduce sensation. You’ll need to wear a condom as well with these if you want to lower the risk of reducing your partners’ sensation too. There are a couple of tablet options as well, the main one being Priligy, which you’ll take before you plan on having sex. These work by increasing serotonin levels in your brain - giving you more ejaculatory control.
