We'll talk about prostate infections today. Prostate infections are common infections in elderly men. These happen because of the enlargement of the prostate and because of the blockage to the flow of urine the bacteria get inside the prostate and cause infection. Infection of the prostate can occur in young men also but it is less common and it comes under a totally different category and since we are talking about the common infections of prostate will not be discussing infection of the prostate in young men. Today we'll be just discussing the infection of the prostate in elderly man which is due to BPH or enlargement of the prostate. The symptoms of prostatic infections are burning whenever the person passes urine. He may also have some pain in the penis or in the lower abdomen when he passes urine. There could be frequent passage of urine both in day and night and sometimes there could be blood in the urine. Many times the patient may have fever and sometimes chills also that is shivering associated with fever in prostate infections. The diagnosis of prostate infection is easy. When you go to a urologist he'll advise you a urine test, some simple blood test and an ultrasound of the abdomen and all these together can diagnose infections of the prostate. The treatment for infections of the prostate is antibiotics. If the infection is mild tablets are given whereas if the infection is severe injection antibiotics have to be given. The diagnosis as I told is easy but sometimes the treatment may not be that easy which means the patient may not respond to antibiotics and the course of antibiotics will have to be repeated. Sometimes the injection antibiotics will have to be given on a long term basis to control infection. With appropriate treatment most of the infections of the prostate can be controlled and treated. However in some situations despite antibiotics the infection cannot be controlled. In such situation the only treatment would be removal of the prostate by endoscopic surgery. When we remove the prostate, the prostate which is a reservoir or a storage area for bacteria is removed and less bacteria are stored in the prostate and the antibiotics work much better in the absence of a large number of bacteria. That's how prostate infection can be treated because of enlargement of the prostate. Thank you.
