Muscles of the Back

Superficial Muscles (Extrinsic)
These muscles connect the upper limb to the vertebral column and assist in limb movements.

• Trapezius: Elevates, retracts, and rotates the scapula.
• Latissimus Dorsi: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates the arm.
• Levator Scapulae: Elevates and rotates the scapula.
• Rhomboids (Major and Minor): Retract the scapula.

Deep Muscles (Intrinsic)
These muscles lie deep to the superficial muscles and are involved in the movement of the vertebral column.

• Erector Spinae: Extends and laterally flexes the vertebral column.
• Iliocostalis
• Longissimus
• Spinalis
• Semispinalis: Extends and rotates the vertebral column.
• Multifidus: Stabilizes vertebrae during local movements.

• Serratus Anterior: Protracts and stabilizes the scapula.
• Pectoralis Minor: Draws the scapula forward and downward.
• Subclavius: Depresses and protracts the scapula.

Muscles that Move the Humerus

• Deltoid: Abducts, flexes, and extends the humerus.
• Supraspinatus: Initiates the abduction of the arm.
• Infraspinatus: Laterally rotates the arm.
• Teres Major: Medially rotates and adducts the arm.
• Teres Minor: Laterally rotates and adducts the arm.
• Subscapularis: Medially rotates and adducts the arm.
