This is the first part of No Budget Films' new season of its Byzantine history audio epics following the previous 3 episode series "The 57 Years: Byzantium in Exile". This new series is entitled "The Last Roman Dynasty" which centers on the last ruling dynasty of the Byzantine Empire, the Palaiologos Dynasty, better known as the last Roman dynasty- as the Byzantine Empire was in fact the Roman Empire that survived through the middle ages- from their rise in 1261 to the end of the Byzantine Empire in 1453. This new series begins in 1261, right after the last series ended and here the 57 years of the Byzantine Empire in Nicaea is over as the Byzantine army recovers their old capital, Constantinople that had fallen to the armies of the 4th Crusade back in 1204 establishing the Latin Empire there. In 1261, the Latin Empire had met its end after only 57 years, the Byzantine Empire was once again restored to its capital, and a new emperor, Michael VIII Palaiologos was crowned, thus establishing his new dynasty. However, despite Michael's triumphs, having restored empire is a great burden on him as even though they have Constantinople back, he has enemies on all sides both Byzantine Greeks and Latin powers that still remain in Byzantine lands ever since their conquest of 1204. Other than having his own imperial rival the boy emperor of Nicaea John IV Laskaris still around, Michael has more enemies than anyone can think of including the deposed last Latin emperor Baldwin II, a remaining Latin prince in Greece, the Seljuk Turks of Asia Minor, the Mongols, and ambitious rulers of Western Europe. In his early reign as the restored Byzantine emperor, Michael VIII does whatever he can no matter how dirty and vicious his means are in order to save keep his empire alive. As emperor, Michael VIII masters the art of diplomacy, warfare, scheming, betrayal, and threatening to make sure not only he stays in power but for the empire he worked so hard to restore stay alive.

This is an audio epic is a work of historical fiction in which tells a true story set in the 13th century, though in the No Budget Films perspective. It consists of mixed media including No Budget Films' Lego characters, PC game footage, photographs of real locations, historical illustrations, and artworks from various online artists.
