10 Rarest Cat Breeds In The World
Cats have become one of the most popular pets in the world. They’re just so adorable and, yes, loving to their humans! They’re also highly flexible, able to be domestic or wild, living in forests, jungles, prairie, and even cities. Although many of us are familiar with many cat breeds, there’s many others you’ve probably never heard of! In this video, we’ll explore some of the rarest cat breeds in the world!

Number 10: The Norwegian Forest Cat
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, super fluffy rare breed popular in Europe. These cats are typically very sweet and gentle and they’re friendly once they get to know you. Being a near perfect pet, this gentle giant thrives in a family environment. They also live 14-16 years, giving you all that time to have a loving, playful companion! However, Norwegian Forest Cats are known to get heart and kidney disease, which means they need to be monitored often. And, it may be surprising to learn that this beautiful cat almost went extinct during World War II. However, the efforts of The Norwegian Forest Cat Club played a major role in saving the breed. The club succeeded in doing so by using a particular breeding method to re-grow their population. In the 1970s, this beautiful cat was finally registered as a breed. So, thanks to the efforts of The Norwegian Forest Cat Club, people all over the world can still enjoy this breed to this day!

Number 9: The Serengeti
A newer addition to the world of cats, the Serengeti is highly desired as a pet. They were developed in the 1990s by crossbreeding a Bengal and an Oriental Shorthair. This means these cats have long, elegant bodies, long legs, and bold eyes. This stunning animal is also playful and graceful, active and confident, which makes the Serengeti an ideal fur baby. However, watch out! They have nimble toes that are perfect for opening cupboards and drawers. And, being highly intelligent, these kitties tend to find ways to get into places that surprise their families. Though it’s best to keep these cats indoors, make sure to keep them occupied, as they’re very active felines!

Number 8: The Ocelot
The ocelot is a wild cat, but that didn’t stop people from trying to take them as pets! They certainly look majestic, so it’s no wonder people want them! However, you should know that ocelots have a few quirks and they don’t take commands well. That’s not surprisingly, since they are cats. But, what’s rather overwhelming for some people is the distinctive odor these felines emit. Not to mention their mating call is something out of nightmares. You don’t want to wake up to THAT sound in the middle of the night! On a good note, though, the Ocelot isn’t anywhere near going extinct, though their numbers have suffered due to them being hunted for their fur.

Number 7: The Ragamuffin
The Ragamuffin is a domestic cat with some rather unique traits. First, these cats are large, intelligent, and very strong. People describe their thick coats as unbelievably soft. Second, these kitties are prone to heterochromia, a condition that causes their eyes to be 2 different colors. Not only that, but Ragamuffins are the 33rd most popular feline—and here we’ll learn why! They’re clingy, affectionate, love people, and enjoy cuddling and playing. As a result, they’re often called ‘puppy-like’. Not to mention they’re fond of learning new tricks and enjoy fetch, just like dogs! Some Ragamuffins even enjoy walking on a leash. If we can top THIS, Ragamuffins are also patient with children and love being around other pets. These lovely cats can live up to 18 years, so you can enjoy them for a long time! Who wouldn’t love these wonderful family kitties?
Number 6: Geoffroy’s Cat
Geoffrey’s Cat is a small, wild cat from South America—and, in fact, in the world, as they tend only to weigh 8lb when fully grown. And, though the name Geoffrey’s Cat sounds like a person named Geoffrey owns it, this is the name for the entire species. In contrast to the large, domestic Ragamuffin, Geoffrey’s Cat is very small and exotic. They have stunning spotted fur, which is one of the main reasons people have tried to keep them as pets. In fact, this species was also apparently used to breed a type of exotic safari cat. Sadly, however, in the 1960s to 1980s, Geoffrey’s Cat was hunted and killed for their exotic fur, negatively affecting their population. In response, several countries made it illegal to cut this little cat. Again, unlike the Ragamuffin, which loves company, Geoffey’s Cat prefers solitude.
