〜得る・〜得ない

Verb stem + 得る(える/うる)


①”~ uru/eru” is used in the same meaning as "~ できる".
②”~ uru/eru” is used in the same meaning as "~ 可能性がある".
"うる" is the written style of "える". Recently, both "うる" and "える" are used. However, in the case of negative form, only "える" is used. For a particular word, only one reading is used, such as "考え得る" or "出来得る".


考え得る全ての方法を試してみたが、ダメだった。
⇒考えることができる全ての方法を試してみたが、ダメだった。
I tried all the methods I could think of, but it didn't work.


鬱はだれでもかかりうる病気だ。
⇒鬱はだれでもかかる可能性がある病気だ。
Depression is an illness that anyone can get


いつ死ぬかなんて誰も予測し得ないことだ。

〜得る・〜得ない are often used for formal sentences and is difficult to use for everyday things, but there are also things that have come to be used on a daily basis, such as "あり得る" and "あり得ない."

A. That actor seems to have an affair!
