A military transport plane crashed into a popular hotel and residential area in northern Indonesia on Tuesday, killing dozens of people.

The plane, a C-130 Hercules, crashed in the city of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, shortly after takeoff. The pilot had asked to return to a nearby air force base because of technical problems, Reuters reports.

There were 12 personnel, including the pilot, on board. Reuters reports that at least 30 people have been killed by the crash so far.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, Indonesian police or military aircraft have been in 10 fatal crashes over the last decade. The BBC reports that this is the second plane crash that Medan has experienced in 10 years.
