William Harrison Ainsworth (1805–1882) was an English novelist best known for his historical romances infused with gothic atmosphere, folklore, and dramatic suspense. A contemporary of Charles Dickens, Ainsworth rose to prominence with works like Rookwood (1834) and The Tower of London (1840), earning a wide Victorian readership. Though his popularity later declined, he was a significant figure in early 19th-century popular fiction, noted for blending history with the supernatural and for his flair for sensational storytelling. “The Spectre Bride,” one of his early Gothic tales, reflects his enduring fascination with mystery, romance, and the eerie forces that haunt the past.
