Of 14 whales entangled in shark nets along Queensland and New South Wales this year, it is the first whale confirmed to have died. The death has reignited long-standing calls for the government to end its shark mesh net program aimed at protecting swimmers, which currently deploys nets at 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong
