A charged particle follows a helical path in a magnetic field when its velocity has both a component parallel and a component perpendicular to the field. The perpendicular component of velocity causes the particle to move in a circular path, while the parallel component causes it to advance in a straight line along the direction of the magnetic field. The combination of these two motions results in a combined helical motion, similar to a spring or a spiral. 

Here's a breakdown of the helical path:

Magnetic Force: 

A charged particle moving in a magnetic field experiences a force that is perpendicular to both its velocity and the magnetic field. 

Velocity Components: 

When the particle's velocity is not parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic field, it can be resolved into two components: 

Perpendicular Component (v⊥): This component is responsible for causing the circular motion of the particle within a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. 

Parallel Component (v∥): This component of velocity is along the direction of the magnetic field and causes the particle to move linearly. 

Combined Motion: 

The helical path is the result of the particle continuously moving in a circle while simultaneously advancing along the axis of the magnetic field. 

Helical Axis: 

The axis of the helix is the direction of the magnetic field. 

Helical Properties:

Radius: The radius of the circular motion (and thus the helix) is determined by the perpendicular component of velocity and the strength of the magnetic field. 

Pitch: The pitch is the distance the particle travels along the magnetic field direction in one complete revolution of the circular path. It is equal to the parallel component of velocity multiplied by the time period of the circular motion.
