Sir Keir Starmer used his New Year message to promise voters will feel “positive change” in 2026, saying Labour will “defeat the decline and division offered by others”. He admitted life has been tough, but pointed to plans for lower bills, more police, new local health hubs, frozen rail fares, prescription charges and fuel duty, plus a higher minimum wage.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch hit back, saying Britain has seen “no growth, higher taxes and record unemployment”, but claimed the Conservatives can “back business” and fix the economy.

Other party leaders also looked ahead to the May elections. Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said his party can win again and warned against “Farage’s Britain”. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called May’s vote the most important before the next general election and criticised Labour and the Conservatives on new tech like crypto and AI. SNP leader John Swinney struck a more upbeat note, mentioning Scotland’s World Cup qualification and upcoming major events.
