Once, the Kozuke Shogunate ruled by hereditary privilege, until their weaknesses were revealed and the Imperial Kan’in dynasty ignited a restoration war that shattered the old order. Still, the Kan’in victory carried the seed of its downfall: a court too distant, too divine, too slow to govern a world that was leaving them behind and bringing Japan under threat. Out of the chaos stepped the Hayashi, a shogunate forged in administration, intelligence, and relentless mobilization. When a vast continental coalition from China proclaimed a holy crusade to “end the island's paganism,” the response of the Hayashi Shogunate was brutal in its simplicity: hold the straits, harden the hills, and turn every retreat into a trap. They fought with the grim courage this song captures then, and would again later, when they turned this aggression back on the mainland, and even refashioned the very religion of their enemies for their own people. Indeed, the Hayashi Shogunate went beyond the precipice of history's horizon, even reaching for the stars themselves.
