SMOKY, THE YORKSHIRE TERRIER WHO EARNED THE RANK OF SERGEANTOn March 12, 1944, a soldier from one of the regiments assigned to New Guinea found an ammunition box that an enemy squadron had abandoned by the side of the road. When he opened it, a scrawny, disheveled Yorkshire Terrier emerged from inside. The little dog weighed barely two kilos and stood about 18 centimeters tall. In her sad, dazed eyes you could read fear. She had spent a long time locked in that box, without water, without food, and without being able to see the light.One of the soldiers in the regiment, Corporal Wynne, offered his comrade to buy the little dog from him. Wynne, who had grown up surrounded by pets, thought it would be a good idea to have some company in the midst of so much loneliness, sadness, and death. What the soldier did not imagine was that that Terrier, whom he ended up naming “Smoky,” would go on to become a true heroine. During the year and a half she spent in the war, Smoky would survive air raids, take part in more than 12 combat missions, save a battalion of 250 soldiers, and receive multiple recognitions and decorations, among them the PDSA certificate for bravery and devotion to animals, and the medal for distinguished service by animals in war and in peace.Smoky not only survived the Second World War: she transformed it. She left the trenches a legend and set a precedent in a field of psychology that would later be known as “animal-assisted therapy.” The Terrier visited hospitals as a four-legged nurse, and when the war ended she was promoted with military honors. Her story showed that sometimes the greatest heroes fit in the palm of a hand.
