The Limerick was made famous by Mr Edward Lear, in the 19th century but is thought to have actually been first created in the early 18th century. A Limerick is usually funny, and often times a bit dirty too, and almost always puts a smile on somebody’s face. But how do we write them? Let’s take a look.

Basically, the limerick is a five-line poem consisting of a triplet and a couplet. So, lines 1, 2, and 5 are a bit longer and rhyme, while the shorter lines of 3 and 4 rhyme. You’re going to want 8-10 syllables in the longer lines and around 6 syllables in the shorter lines. Remember, you’ll want to read your Limerick out plenty of times to make sure your meter flows here. Limericks are very distinguishable with how they roll off the tongue.

The final thing I’ll say on writing a Limerick, is make sure whatever topic you’ve chosen, even if it’s very serious… and if you’re going down the traditional route of course… make sure that it puts a smile on your reader’s face. Here’s a quick example of something I wrote for this video:

My Limerick:

There once was a man with a devilish itch
Who’d torment others with three kicks and a stitch,
'til he met the proud man
With a steel frying pan
And he cried “my my isn’t karma a bitch!”
