For three excruciating days, Navel lay helpless in the dirt after being hit by a car, his body baking under the 109°F sun. Badly wounded on his leg and unable to stand, he was utterly alone—except for a kind man working nearby who brought him food and water when no one else would stop. This man couldn’t take Navel home, not even for a night, but he had something far more powerful: compassion. Desperate to help, he contacted our rescue. It's only because of him that Navel is alive today.
When our volunteer found him, Navel’s leg wounds were already infested with screwworms—larvae of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly, which feeds on living flesh. The pain is unimaginable, and it’s not an exaggeration to say it feels like being eaten alive. These parasites burrow into wounds, multiply rapidly, consume healthy tissue, and transform injuries into rotting, open wounds. The stench, the agony, the relentless flies, this is what Navel endured. He was severely dehydrated, emaciated, trembling from pain, and still...he wagged his tail when help arrived.
Navel is one of many victims of a devastating screwworm outbreak in Nicaragua—confirmed in 2024 for the first time since 1996. The epidemic, reported by Nicaragua’s Ministry of Agriculture and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), led to a national animal health alert.
This outbreak has caused immense suffering, and Navel is a heartbreaking example of how brutal nature—and human neglect—can be. Covered in parasites, starving, and in pain, he had every reason to give up. But he didn’t. Now at a vet clinic, he’s finally getting the care he needs: his wounds are being cleaned, the screwworms removed, and fluids are restoring his strength. He has a long road ahead, with antibiotics, wound care, and slow healing. Navel’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion. He was saved because someone cared. He will recover because you care.
Please help cover his medical costs and give him the life he still wants by donating or purchasing supplies from his wish list. Navel didn’t survive three days of hell to be forgotten. Let’s show him—and all those still suffering—that he matters. Thank you.
