In the 10th century, from the former Kingdom of Asturias arose the Kingdom of León, which soon became the most powerful of Christian Hispania. Under kings such as Alfonso VI, it conquered Toledo and proclaimed itself Visigothic heir; under queens like Urraca I, it showed that even women could rule in times of war. But its greatest legacy came in 1188, when Alfonso IX convened the first Cortes with civic representation in Europe, limiting royal power and sowing the seeds of parliamentarianism. Later united with Castile in 1230, León ceased to exist as an independent kingdom, but its political, cultural, and symbolic heritage still resonates in modern Spain.
