If you’re thinking of doing a PhD, you’re often thinking about sending different applications to different schools. The question then becomes how many applications did you send out? My answer is always quite simple, you should send out as many possible applications as you possibly can. The reason is also simple, that you don’t want to rule out any particular opportunity before you get the chance to fully investigate it.

There is also a caveat though with sending a PhD applications. You want to make sure that you actually care for your PhD applications, and you customize the application to each school. If you just send a blanket application to each individual school, it is highly unlikely that you will get into the particular school of your choice.

You should also build relationships with professors over time. Ask your current professors where would be a good place to go to, and see if they have relationships with any of those particular professors at those schools.
