"Behind us is Tampa Theatre and in front of us is some of our favorite restaurants. One block over is Le Meridien hotel and Sacred Heart Church. And conveniently located right in the heart of it all, The Vault. In 1887, Franklin Street was the main street of Downtown Tampa. It was the first street to have electric lighting and paved roads. Today, it’s thriving as a resurgence of residents return to the downtown area. And while downtown is doing its modern makeover, one of Tampa’s newest event venues, The Vault, is showing that history can be just as glamourous. The Vault was really a bank. In 1923 it was built as the Exchange National Bank. And in Downtown Tampa, right here on Franklin Street in between Twiggs and Zack, it was the financial hub.It was not only a place for people to keep their money and their possessions safe, but it was just celebrated as this grand, enormous, energetic space. So in the late 1990’s, this whole building - the whole block of buildings - was up for sale. And it was a huge restoration project for someone to take on. And rumors were that it was just going to be torn down and made into a parking lot. So the Wilson Company, thankfully, in 1999, purchased this whole building and went through the full restoration project. It was amazing to just see, slowly, all of, you know, the modernization that had happened in the 50’s and the 60’s and all that just slowly stripped away, and what came out of it was just this incredible marble floor, the ceilings restored, and it’s such a treasure for Downtown Tampa. As a floral designer with a degree in interior design, when I walked into this building, the architecture was wonderful. Everything from traditional to modern design. And you can really take your event, wedding, into any direction. Walking up outside, I noticed that it was very unique cause it’s an old bank. But when I came inside, I really liked the way that it was a blank canvas. The best thing that I love about this place is that it’s right here in the middle of downtown. You’ve got the Tampa Theatre right next door, the Performing Arts Center, the river, Riverwalk, it’s just a beautiful location in a thriving city and I just love it. Actually when I came here to show my client for the first event, the first impression I got when I walked in was how wonderful the staff was to work with. They were so friendly and warm and inviting. And then just walking in, I mean, her eyes just lit up. And from then I’ve just been kind of hooked on the place. My favorite feature really are the windows. And the ceilings are 35 feet tall. And so when you have floor to ceiling windows up to that grand ceiling, it’s incredible. And so in the daytime you get this amazing light, and then at night not only does the space become transformed, but then you have this urban atmosphere that really is this incredible combination because it’s a classic venue - it’s grand - but it’s also sophisticated and urban. And depending if you want to have the shades up then you get to see all of the urban landscape and the lighting in the background. So it’s really neat to be able to play with that. The space’s 6000 square feet can entertain up to 300 guests for cocktail receptions and 200 for seated dinners. It’s adjacent Pocket Park serves as a beautiful and convenient outdoor space for cocktail hours or other events. But one of the coolest hidden features is the historic walk-in vault tucked away in the back of the venue. This is the original walk-in vault of Exchange National Bank. And when those doors are sealed, this entire room is air tight. So when the bank was first designed, they included a vault ventilator just in case someone accidentally locked themselves in. The Vault ventilator would allow people to breathe until the doors were reopened. The new owners embraced these types of unique, original features, and have even named a drink after it - the Vault Ventilator Cocktail. No matter the look of the event - whether it be wedding, corporate, or otherwise - the Vault’s impressive style and convenient proximity to hotels, restaurants and churches, makes it fantastic venue in Downtown Tampa.
