Ray Guy: Remembering a Raiders Legend

In 1973, the Raiders made history by becoming the first team to select a punter in the first round of the NFL Draft. With the 23rd pick, they chose Ray Guy from the University of Southern Mississippi, a bold decision led by Managing General Partner, Al Davis. Guy quickly made a name for himself, redefining the role of the punter in the league. His presence on the Raiders was synonymous with hope in the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

Before Ray Guy, the punter position was often filled by players with other field responsibilities. In the early Super Bowls, for example, running back Donny Anderson of the Green Bay Packers handled the punts, while quarterbacks like Steve Spurrier and Bob Lee took on this role for their respective teams in the 1970s. Even linebackers, such as Paul Maguire, were used as punters in the 1960s.
