A "heavy metal paleontology song" about the extinction of the dinosaurs, or the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) extinction event, thanks to a big old asteroid. Not a folk metal song this time, pretty much just straight-forward heavy metal. If you're a fan of Jurassic Park or dinosaurs, you might appreciate this.
Between sixty-five and sixty-six million years ago (m.y.a), more than half of the world's species were obliterated. The last of the non-avian dinosaurs went extinct. So too did the mosasaurs and plesiosaurs of the sea, and the pterosaurs of the sky. Plankton took a hard hit as well, as did vegetation, and many families of brachiopods and sea sponges disappeared. Ammonites vanished, and many species of shark did too, and so did the belemnites.
Speaking of belemnites, here is a video of a fossil belemnite I once found: • Belemnite Fossil at Port Waikato (New Zeal...

Lyrics:
It was sixty-six m.y.a,
The course of all Earth's life did change.
An orb appeared up in the sky,
Some would live but most would die.
Pterosaurs and conifers,
Magnolias and hadrosaurs.
Mammals that looked up in fear,
As the rock came hurtling towards their sphere.
Hours of terrible violence,
Years of hardship and of death.
Tyrannosaurus Rex was there to see,
The worst day in Earth's history.
The course of evolution changed irrevocably,
And cleared the path for our ascendancy.
Tyrannosaurus Rex was there to see,
The worst day in Earth's history.
A sudden flash lit up the sky,
Another followed, enough to blind.
The ground began to shake and heave,
Hot glass rain did burn and cleave.
Ginkgos and mosasaurs,
Palm trees and dromaeosaurs.
The early birds flew up in fear,
As the rock crashed into their sphere.
Hours of terrible violence,
Years of hardship and of death.
Tyrannosaurus Rex was there to see,
The worst day in Earth's history.
The course of evolution changed irrevocably,
And cleared the path for our ascendancy.
Tyrannosaurus Rex was there to see,
The worst day in Earth's history.
