There are two different roles: Bystander and Murderer. In addition, only one Bystander will have a secret weapon.

The regular Bystander's job is to survive the Murderer.

The Bystander with a secret weapon is a randomly chosen player who has been given a gun. This person has to find out who the murderer is and kill him/her. If he/she shoots a bystander, their render distance will be shortened temporarily, and they will drop the weapon. Whoever is the Murderer cannot receive the weapon, but any Bystander can pick it up. If the bystander with the gun is killed, the weapon is dropped on the floor. There are three different ways to receive the gun.

1. Start the game with Bystander.

2. Pick up the gun if the Bystander who started with the gun was murdered or shot an innocent Bystander.

3. Collect 5 props (objects with a glowing outline).

The Murderer has to kill everyone without being killed. He is equipped with a knife which can be activated hidden using the two buttons. Whoever is Murderer and he/she hits a person with a knife they will (usually) be instantly killed. Whoever is Murderer, he/she can see other people's colored footprints, which is initally used to track down players. If the Murderer goes too long without killing someone, smoke will appear from Murderer and he/she has to kill someone in order to hide it. If Murderer was able to kill everyone, he/she will win the game. If Murderer dies, the bystanders win. On some servers, the Murderer can press E while looking at a dead body to disguise at that person, at the cost of 1 Prop.

There is a common glitch where a person might need to be stabbed multiple times in order to die. If a person is killed near a large prop they will become stuck in it. If you die you lose.
