When I visited Musée National Picasso-Paris with my mom a few months ago, they have curated an exhibition of a series of drawings and paintings of Maya Picasso. Maya is the eldest daughter of Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter. In the exhibit, It was a delight to see his series “Maya à la poupée” (Maya with doll) and a few paintings where he used Marie-Thérèse Walter’s initials—almost crypt-like but still somewhat very obvious—in his paintings. Maya has died last December 20, 2022.

The Museum is housed in the historical, Hôtel Salé. Salé means salty in French. Salty because the original owner of this building is a salt-tax farmer. Many moons ago, around the 15th century, the working class have to pay gabelle or French tax on their salt, except the ruling class—nobles, clergy, other privileged people. A few decades after, the building was passed down to different owners by sale or inheritance. It was acquired by the City of Paris in 1964 and granted historical monument status in 1968.

Picasso’s Art and politics is amazing but don’t forget to admire the central staircase, it’s based on Michelangelo Buonarotti's design of the Laurentian library in Florence.

One thing I love about Picasso is his politics. He used his Art for peace. He is always against war. I love his painting, Guernica (1937), it was a response against the bombing of a Basque Country town—Guernica—in northern Spain during the Spanish Civil War. It was a war between the Republican and Nationalist forces in Spain, while supporting the Nationalist belligerents, Nazi Germany and Italy bombed Guernica.

Also, I like Picasso’s style, he doesn’t really have a cohesive or specific style and medium, he’s all over the place and I find that very adventurous and not boring. His style is influenced by many factors like war or love. He paints with black and white and blues for depressing social issues but colorful and cryptic when painting his partners and family.
