In today's presentation, we will explain three international logistics terms: free time, demurrage and detention.

Free Time: Free Time is the period of time offered by a carrier to shippers and consignees free of charge, covering both demurrage and detention periods.

Beyond this time additional charges such as, but not limited to demurrage and detention charges, will be due.

Demurrage charges: If the container is not taken out of the port within the free time allowed, demurrage fee is charged.

Detention Charges: If the container is not delivered to the port or container depot within the free time allowed, detention fee is charged.

Demurrage fees are charged when a container stays inside a port terminal for too long, while detention fees are charged when a container is held outside the port beyond the allowed free time.
